What usually goes wrong
A dead outlet often traces back to a tripped GFCI in another spot, such as the basement, garage, a bathroom or outside. Reset every GFCI you can find and check the panel. If the outlet is still dead, or it is loose, cracked, discolored or will not hold a plug, it needs repair.
Common jobs include replacing two-prong outlets with grounded or GFCI-protected ones, adding outlets so cords are not strung across rooms, running a dedicated circuit for a sump pump, freezer or window unit, and hanging ceiling fans on boxes rated to carry them. In older homes, ask the electrician to check for knob-and-tube wiring before insulation is blown into walls or an attic.
New circuits and panel work often need a permit. Ask whether your job does and who pulls it.
